The Season of Renewal

We've been hard at work crafting away in the cold New England weather. Creativity keeps us warm. But finally, spring is here, and we are excited to share all the juicy details of our new product lines! We debuted the products at the Mill No. 5 Oddity Market on April 14th and will also have them available to purchase for anyone who got tickets to the Beltaine Fire: Yoga, Tarot, and Moon Magic event on April 29.

Spring Products

Ostara's Renewal

Ostara is the Germanic Goddess of spring and dawn. She is the first warm spring winds (element of air), the birds that return, the trees that bud and curl forth leaves and flowers. She is the awakening earth after a winter of little light. Ostara is also the pagan/wiccan sabbat that falls on the vernal (spring) equinox.

Known as “the season of renewal,” spring is the perfect time to support our liver, kidneys, and lymphatic systems, as these systems tend to have less flow and more stagnation over the winter season. The lymphatic system of the body is fundamental to immune function, the absorption of nutrients, and body purification. Herbs that support lymph flow are fundamental during the springtime.

Body Oil: In warmer seasons, light body oils are great for the skin, not greasy, and don’t clog the pores. Body oil is best used right out of the shower or bath, when your skin is still slightly damp. Apply a thin even layer of oil over the body, gently massaging towards the heart as you apply it. The oil will absorb into your skin and as the water dries up, the moisture from the oil will last all day. This herbal oil blend supports a happy and healthy body, inside and out!

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) relieves fatigue and improves digestion
Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) is cooling and energizing
Sage (Salvia officinalis) is purifying and disinfecting
Peppermint (Mentha piperita) is refreshing and reduces inflammation
Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata) is calming and improves circulation
Almond, Jojoba, and Coconut Carrier Oils are all great for skin softening, nourishing, and moisturizing

Body Scrub: This herbal blend also comes in a green tea body scrub to complete your rejuvenating home spa ritual. Green tea contains large quantities of polyphenols. Polyphenols have been shown to have antioxidant, anticancer, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. Most of the polyphenols in green tea are catechins. One of the major catechins in green tea (EGCG) has been shown to be the most effective agent against skin inflammation and cancerous changes in the skin.

Rosemary, grapefruit, sage, mint, & ylang ylang essential oils (see properties above), all natural raw sugar, all natural raw honey (naturally antibacterial, great for acne treatment and prevention, full of antioxidants, great for slowing down aging, extremely moisturizing and soothing, and helps create a glow), green tea leaves, vitamin E (basic antioxidant properties, and works to block free radicals from the body to reduce wrinkles and keep the skin youthful-looking), coconut, jojoba, and almond oils. Apply to skin in the shower, rubbing in a circular motion with short strokes towards your heart. Rinse off with warm/hot water before getting out of shower.

SPRING PRIESTESS

She is the maiden, the high priestess, and carries the winds of the east with her as she rises into the air. She expands her essence to renew and grow, bringing equal light and shadow. The hellbore, crocus, birds, and rabbits are sacred to her.

Facial Massage Oil: Our facial massage oil is full of skin-nourishing, wrinkle-battling, anti-oxidant-rich ingredients that will help you slough off winter and prepare for spring and summer.  The spring priestess represents the maiden, and we all possess her beauty despite our calendar age, we only need to coax her out of her slumber. Use our facial massage directions with this oil to pamper yourself, encourage lymph flow and cleansing, and let your inner priestess be reborn. We craft our oils with the highest quality ingredients that we are able to source.

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) calms, renews, and purifies. It is known to rejuvenate skin, fight wrinkles, and may assist in scar healing.
Geranium (Pelargonium roseum) promotes peace, protection and love.  It tightens skin, improves elasticity, and controls oil production.
Lemon (Citrus limon) is antiseptic and invigorating. It cleanses toxins, reduces fine lines, and can heal minor blemishes (may cause photosensitivity).
Frankincense (Boswellia sacra) is the king of oils. It is anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and promotes an even skin tone.

A custom blend of skin nourishing oils: organic coconut, almond, jojoba, rosehip, and calendula-infused olive oil blend (EVOO, coconut and almond), is used to ensure a light and absorbent product.  Coconut oil is full of antioxidants, is rich in vitamins and vital fatty acids, rosehip oil improves skin tone and reduces environmental damage, and olive oil is a rich and nourishing emollient. Calendula (Calendula officinalis) flowers are gentle, help reduce inflammation, and improve the overall condition of your skin. Enjoy and feel renewed!

Daily use is encouraged.

Beauty Lotion: Our beauty lotion is designed to moisturize, nourish, and heal.  The spring priestess gathers nature’s bounty to conjure her own magic centered on renewal and rebirth. Our facial skin is constantly exposed to the elements throughout our lives.  In order to protect the longevity of our largest organ from exposure to harmful environmental stressors, and without adding harsh synthetic chemicals to our regimes, we trust in the maiden for she provides all we need from nature’s apothecary.

We begin our lotion with rich and nourishing oils: organic almond, rosehip (Rosa canina), coconut, and extra virgin olive oil blend (EVOO, almond, and coconut) infused with calendula (see properties above).

We love the anti-bacterial and protective qualities of beeswax, and source ours from a local friend in southern Massachusetts.  Additionally, we we add fair-trade mango butter, sourced from a woman’s co-op, to add essential fatty acids to our lotion that tightens, firms, and easily absorbs.

Herbal infusions from calendula (see properties above) and green tea (Camellia sinensis) are added to the product next.  Green tea contains large quantities of polyphenols. Polyphenols have been shown to have antioxidant, anticancer, antibacterial, and antiviral properties. Most of the polyphenols in green tea are catechins. One of the major catechins in green tea (EGCG) has been shown to be the most effective agent against skin inflammation and cancer.

Hydrosols are waters that are distilled from flowers and other plant materials.  We add yarrow (Achilliea millefolium) hydrosol to assist in dry skin, as well as to reduce redness.

EO’s of Lavender, Geranium, Lemon, Frankincense (see above for properties) are blended for their healing qualities and Vitamin E is added for its rich skin fortifying nature.

Finally we add arrowroot powder to reduce greasiness and help bind together the lotion.

For use in morning, night, or both! Always use UV protection while exposed to sunlight.  This product is made fresh and in small batches, so use often and soon!  May be refrigerated for longer shelf life.

Full Moon Magic, Transformation, and the Science of Worms

It's the full moon in Virgo AND, the last full moon before spring arrives! Can you feel it?  We can. The longer exposure to daylight is signaling our bodies and metabolisms to WAKE UP, and there are a number of ways to help that process along! The Virgo moon is a healing moon (I mean, aren’t they all in some way, shape, or form?).  But specifically, Virgo encourages order, thus it's a perfect time to release habitual patterns that stagnate our bodies, minds, and souls, thus creating dis-order.

One excellent tip from Brittany Nickerson Wood of Thyme Herbal in Western Massachusetts is to eat more bitter and fermented foods (bitter greens like dandelion greens and chicory and some delicious kimchi would work) to cleanse the blood, and get the immune system moving (Herbal Homestead Journal available at www.thymeherbal.com).  And a tip from our yoga teacher in-residence, Chrissy, at Rebel Yell Yoga: start to actually MOVE your body.  Check out her yoga blog at www.rebelyellyogalife.com for lots of mind-body goodness.  Get to yoga, go for a jog, start a regular fitness program.  Use that extra energy to your advantage!  Drink tea, drink water with unfiltered apple cider vinegar, and get some fresh air, goddammit.

Fascinatingly enough, this full moon is known as the worm moon in Native American cultures. Ecologically, worms play an enormous role in cleansing, renewal, and transformation.  What does this sound like moon magic junkies?  Why yes, it’s ALL connected!  The moon, the earth, the universe!  Around this time of year as the soil thaws, our friendly ecological engineer, the earthworm (Lumbricus terrestris) , starts to metabolically activate and MOVE!  When worms move through soil, their little squirmy wormy tunnels aerate the earth (I always make sure my garden boxes are full of these little dude/dudettes (they are hermaphrodites) for good plant growth and survival). Aerated soil allows cleansing and creates space, so that water, nutrients, and oxygen can move with ease and nourish newly sown seeds and previously established roots. Worms also nourish the soil through their own existences (i.e., through worm poop or "castings") and provide minerals and nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorous, which literally transforms seeds into plants from spring until fall. This is ecology, this is life, this is magic, this is TRANSFORMATION!  The little Lumbricus transforms the entire subsurface environment to allow growth, expansion, and abundance.  They are quite the tapestry weavers, and thus, this moon is aptly named.

All in all, spring is nearly here and it’s a good time to anchor and focus: for the transformation within you (magic is merely the art of transformation) will begin to unfurl, like the petals of a flower reaching for the sun, or the sails of a ship setting out on a great journey.

Blessed Be.

From Young Punk Rockers to Young-at-Heart Healers

Then...

12 years ago, deep in the bowels of the young, drunk, and dirty Boston punk rock scene, Chrissy and I met. Likely at the Abbey Lounge in Somerville. Likely while spitting Miller High Life all over The Acrobrats while they played a set on stage. Our bands played together many times in the early 2000s and we quickly bonded, cuz you see, rocker chicks were a rarity and needed to stick together.

And now...

Fast forward over a decade and here we are... older... closer... and now collaborating musically, artistically, mentally, and spiritually. The Chaos Factor is a side project that took many years to find its identity, but now it's here and it's on a roll. We've definitely found our witchy niche, inspired by our historic Salem surroundings as well as the earth, the moon, nature, and all the healing elements above and below.

On love...

Sunday was our first vending opportunity in Salem, at the Pop Rocks Craft Fair Popup at Old Salem Town Hall. I typically don't buy into "Valentine's Day" themed things, but love was in the air on Sunday. Working with Creative North Shore was a dream and all the other vendors were awe-inspiring. We are so lucky to be surrounded by such a hard-working creative group, and we are in LOVE with our local arts and music scene. Here are a couple of our favorite collaborators...

And a couple new fans...

Oh, I almost forgot, my favorite moment from the entire day! Playing an acoustic set for these adorable bouncy twin girls, Elsie Mae and Clementine. Ahhhhh! Exploding hearts!

What's next?

Well, that's about it with the gushy love fest for awhile... Keep an eye on our events page to see where we will pop up next. And make sure you give all our social accounts a follow!
